| The chassisnumber of your Volvo 480 is the most important
identification number, but not the only one. The picture shows the places
where identification marks are fitted. |

| An example of a chassisnumber is explained below:
*XLBEX193EGC500001*
XLB is the identification of the manufacturer
E identifies the model, E is for 480, K is for 440, L=460
The two digits following the second X identify the engine type:
03 = B18E(S)-105
04 = B18E(D)-104
05 = B18FT(M)-107
06 = B18FT(M)-107
14 = B18E-104 tot modeljaar 1990
17 = B16F-109 (Finland)
18 = B18F-106 tot modeljaar 1990
19 = B18FT-107
31 = B20F-107
- The third digit identifies the gear box:
3 = manual 5-speed
5 = automatic 4-speed with lock-up
- E stands for Europe
- The following letter indicates the model year G = 1986, H = 1987,
J = 1988, K = 1989, L = 1990, M = 1991, N = 1992, P = 1993, R = 1994, S = 1995
- C is the plant code of the Nedcar facilities in Born, the Netherlands
- The last six digits are the chassisnumber. 480 chassisnumbers start
at 50000 and 440 chassisnumbers at 001000. As not all chassisnumbers
were used, it is difficult to tell which actual serial number the car
has. See the table below for more information.
Advantage of using starting numbers per year is that parts catalogues are
more easy to use, to prevent incorrect ordering of parts. Missing chassisnumbers
may not have been produced, or may have been produced but used for tests
and prototypes (crash tests, experimental cars, etc.). The last chassisnumber
may have been number 594019.

| There is more information on the type mark printed. Besides the chassis number
as explained above the tables below explain the other information. Information
about the cars colour can be found on another page. The left table shows the
layout of the type mark. The table on the right explains the contents.

Your car also has a bodynumber which is used for manufacturing
purposes mainly. It nevertheless reveals interesting information. The bodynumber
was fixed using aluminium strip, attached at different places during the
production years. See drawings.
The bodynumber has seven digits. The first two digits indicate the calendar
week of production. The next four digits is the body serial number. The
last digit is a redundant check number. There is no direct relation between
the chassisnumber and the bodynumber.
N.B. This information is put together with great care. But this information
may not be just, true or accurate at any given moment. |
