| Volvo had just taken the new sophisticated car paint facilities
of the Born production plant in operation when the first Volvo 480 was made
in 1986. It had state of the art paint technology. A 22 stage body protection
programme protects your Volvo 480 from rust. This includes a total PVC underbody
coating and special stone chip coating. Also, 38% of total body weight is
made of zinc coated rust resistant steel, while another 10% is made of non-rusting
composite material. Volvo's are known for their longevity, and the Volvo
480 is no exception. The body was finished in the following colours.
1986-1987 The Volvo 480 was showed to the press most often in black. Bumpers and mirrors were colour painted too. The black version had a red lining. The black paint (code 019) however, was not metallic. It nevertheless showed very good, be it on press photos or in real life. Red (code 217) and silver grey metallic (code 184) were also regularly used for official photos. Most cars were finished in black or red. The petrol blue metallic (code 219) and graphite grey metallic (code 304) versions had a different interior finish. The interior with red lining had code 2121 and the blue code 2122.
1987-1988 The catalyst version was introduced. The 1986 Volvo 480 ES offered the B18E engine with 109 hp, while the B18F engine had 102 hp. Silver grey metallic was abandoned to become smoke silver (code 306). Ferrari-like red was replaced by a different shade (code 231). The difference is hard to notice. Black became available in metallic spray only (code 305). Leather upholstery became available (interior code 2320).
1988-1989 The B18E engine was not available anymore (most markets). All Volvo 480's had a catalyst fitted standard. The turbo version was introduced (engine code B18FT), offering 120 hp and notably more torque (175 Nm). Petrol blue metallic was replaced by light blue metallic (code 218).
1989-1990 White became more white. The new shade is a bit brighter (code 234). Buyers opting for graphite grey metallic had to choose beautiful lavender blue metallic (code 311).
1990-1991 Light blue metallic was replaced by paris blue metallic (code 318). The interior is changed into multicolour velours. No red or blue interior lining any more.
1991-1992 The Volvo 480 remained relatively unchanged during all of its years of production. However, in 1991 several noticeable changes were made. The B18FP engine became available, in two tone only (code 350). The two tone version is metallic green over grey. The 2.0 liter engine (engine code B20F) was introduced. New mirrors, wheels, white indicators. Red was again changed into a different shade (code 235).
1992-1993 Only 2.0 i B20F and 1.7 i turbo B18FT engines are available. The two tone version and B18FP engine are not available any more. Vase green metallic (code 314) and steel grey metallic were introduced, while lavender blue metallic and smoke silver metallic were abandoned.
1993-1994 Volvo announces the new GT version. Similar in technical respect as turbo and non-turbo versions, but an even higher level of luxuries, offered at a very reasonable price. New upholstery was introduced. Dark green metallic (code 321) is a new option. Non GT versions had a new interior finish in jacquard/leather. GT versions had a full leather interior.
1994-1995 The Volvo 480 becomes even more exclusive when flame red metallic (code 322) is introduced. The last Volvo 480 was finished in this colour.
